Did you ever wonder why American middle and high school English classes across the country have historically assigned the same texts? This workshop will answer that question, and we’ll look at the past 100 years of “canonical” text selection data for the American ELA curriculum and how the inclusion of a more diverse set of texts positively impacts students’ engagement, reading development and empathy. We’ll discuss strategies for informing and supporting our ELA-teaching colleagues about the possibilities in expanding the canon.
