Independent Reading: One Town's Process to Support Choice

Choice reading is touted in education, however limitations such as curriculum, scheduling, and change resistance present challenges. Learn how one North Andover High School English teacher and her school library/media specialist worked to create a culture of choice in the classroom. From there, independent reading grew within their school and, inspired broadly from sources including Pernille Ripp, NCTE, Donalyn Miller, and Hamilton-Wenham High School’s Independent Reading class, they piloted an English elective class, taught in collaboration with the Stevens Memorial Library.
